Style Pooh-Bahs Q&A: Designer of Rory Beca Talks Design Inspiration and Holiday Style

November 30, 2012

Before setting out to launch a collection back in 2006, designer Rory Edelman had a hunch she could create a darn hot collection many fashionistas would crave to have in their closets. Her collection Rory Beca, features versatile pieces that have a hint of vintage flair, with a touch of Cali cool.  Intrigued by her design aesthetic, I caught up with the designer to find out what inspires her, must-haves for the Holiday and future plans for the line.

Naima Turner: Where did your spark of design creativity first steam from that prompted you to create a line?

Rory Edelman: I was always into fashion, even from a young age. I was in college taking design classes on the side. I called my parents and told them I wanted to drop out of college and start a clothing line. I knew that is what I wanted to do.  Surprisingly, they were all for it.

Naima Turner: I love your design aesthetic! Who are some of the icons, places, things that have inspired your pieces for your Fall 2012 collection?

Rory Edelman: My Fall 2012 collection was inspired by all of the cool women of 70s and 80s rock.

Naima Turner: Let’s talk Holiday, what are some of the must-have pieces from your collection?

Rory Edelman: For holiday I love the shift dresses – they are so easy to wear. I also love the Melvin Tuxedo top. I think it is chic paired with anything.

Naima Turner:  You have all of the Hollywood celeb it girls wearing your pieces – and I have to ask -who was the first to wear your designs?

Rory Edelman: I think the first celebrity to wear my clothes was Britney Spears.

Naima Turner: How major was that moment for you? Did you flip out?

Rory Edelman: It was really fun because at the time she was getting a lot of press and people were constantly emailing me pictures of her in Rory Beca. I didn’t really flip out – I got more excited recently when I ran into a girl at a restaurant who had just got engaged that night and was wearing one of my dresses. That was really exciting.

Naima Turner:  In the future, will we see an expansion of your collection to include accessories, etc.?

Rory Edelman: I will definitely be expanding the line at some point. Accessories are an extension of a designer’s aesthetic, so it will help to further define my brand and the Rory Beca girl as we add to the line.

Naima Turner: For the up and coming designer or budding entrepreneur who may be reading this, what are some reality tips that you can share based on your experience thus far?

Rory Edelman: I think it is really important to never stop asking questions. When I started this company with my mom we had no idea what we were doing. We were constantly asking questions. I always believe you should follow your instincts, but always be open to advice from others.

Naima Turner: Thank you Rory for your time!

Rory Edelman: No – thank you.

Those wanting to get their hands on a Rory Beca piece can find the collection on,, select Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus, and
