While there are many perks to online shopping, cosmetics can be a little difficult to buy blind— it’s not like clothes or shoes where there are clear-cut sizes. Additionally, they can be slightly more difficult to return, especially if you’ve already used them. Below are some tips on how to enjoy the perks and avoid the pitfalls of buying beauty products online:

Follow the savings

For an optimal online shopping experience, do a little detective work beforehand: where can you get the best deals? Some sites offer free shipping; some offer nifty gifts-with-purchase, and others may offer coupons. Popular beauty supply store, Sephora, often has weekly specials (usually offering deluxe samples). Ulta is another well-known store that often offers BOGO deals, and other stores will usually offer seasonal sales or gifts-with-purchase.

Do your research

One of the scariest things about online shopping is the element of the unknown. Luckily, there are a couple of ways around the x-variable— take advantage of online resources, such as MakeupAlley, for consumer-written product reviews, or check-in with your favorite bloggers for their two-cents. Consumer-written reviews and personal blogs can be especially helpful, as they are (in most cases) unbiased— if they think that a certain long-wearing lipstick leaves their lips flaky and patchy, they’ll tell you so. While doing this research, keep your skin type in mind— if a consumer with dry skin loves a certain moisturizer, it does not necessarily mean that will be the best moisturizer for you if you have combination/oily skin. It’s also possible to find swatches online— an image search of the brand/shade usually pulls up a plethora of images. Try to find someone with a skin tone similar to your own, and you’ll get a pretty good idea of how the color will look.

Be cautious

Along with your research, it’s important to shop with caution. Be wary of frauds, especially with independent sellers in online shops that are on EBay and Amazon. If it sounds too good to be true, it just might be. Read customer reviews and go to the brand’s website for tips— there are a lot of ways to avoid faulty products. In some cases, it might be worth it to spend a little extra money and buy from a trusted retailer with a good return policy.

Sometimes, when we shop online, it’s easy to go a little overboard and your bank statements will certainly reflect your spending. For that reason, it’s important to prioritize before you start your little shopping spree. Consider what you really need. Buying beauty products online gives you plenty of opportunities to save money, but it is important to be cautious of who and where you buy from. Make sure that the store you are buying from has a respectable reputation before you take out that credit card!
